John has been involved with the design, manufacture, distribution, and sale of protective clothing, and supporting technical services to the Fire Service for the last 45 years. Over the last few years, he has also been involved at the federal level in developing products and programs for both the private and public sectors in protective clothing and logistical management as well as securing funding streams for the first responders of the United States. In December of 2021 he retired from the LION Group as Vice of Government Relations and Corporate Responsibility for the LION Group. In addition, he was an active member of the Miami Valley Urban Search and Rescue team (Federal Task Force OHTF-1) as a technical Information Specialist and served as a subject matter expert for the US&R Logistical Working Group from 1999-2003. In the 1980s he worked with the Washington Township Fire department as a subject matter expert in Personal protective equipment and was an honorary member of the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association. In the mid 1980’s he along with Naval Sea Systems and the Navy Testing and \Textile Research Center in Natick Massachusetts, developed the new Firefighting protective ensemble (FFP) that is still used to protect Navy damage control members while they fight shipboard fires. This ensemble is deployed to all naval vessels in the United States Navy and in many of the NATO Navy’s.
In January of 2022 he founded JHG Consulting with the idea to help companies develop products for the first responder community, review market strategies to further enhance their presence in the First Responder community, review and analyze new innovated products for the many markets serving the First responder community, continue to work to maintain and increase funding for the First Responder community and advocate for health and wellness initiatives to better serve first responders. In addition to those initiatives, work with the municipal sector to review and study on their ability to respond to all types of disaster mitigation either nature or manmade.
John holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University and has been involved with additional postgraduate work and technical seminaries at various universities. John is married and has one child who is now an active firefighter paramedic for the Washington Township Centerville Fire Department. In addition to his other professional responsibilities, he helped found Ohio Task Force 1 (OHTF1) the 27th Federal Urban search and Rescue Team and served on it from its founding in 2000 until 2013.
He was an active member of the National Fire Protective Association and has served on multiple committees within the NFPA including 1971, 1976, 1991 92 and 93 that address protective clothing for Fire Fighters and as an alternate for NFPA 1500. He is a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials and served on both ASTM F18 and F23 committees. Presently he is a member of E54 committee on Homeland Security. Previously he was Co-chair of the F18 Utility Rainwear task group the chair of F23's FR Industrial Clothing committee. He was also involved in developing a handbook on use of protective clothing in the industrial/chemical workplace. In addition to his first responder activities, he also served as a member of the Business Council of the US Conference of Mayors for 15 years, is a member of the National Advisory Council for the Congressional Fire Service Institute and just retired as Chair of Partners Council of the National Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation and Secretary Treasure of the First Responder Center for Excellence for Reducing Occupational Illness, Injury and Death, Inc. (FRCE), an affiliate foundation of the NFFF, and a board member of the Institute of Fire Engineers (US Brach) . Over the last 14 years in addition his other activities he has been actively involved in working with the United States legislative ands executive branches to promote a higher awareness and additional funding for the US Fire Service. Since the early 2000’s he has been on the board of the Fire Service Industry trade organization Fire and Emergency Manufactures and Service (FEMSA) and a co-chair of their Government Affairs Committee. In September of 2024 he was elected as to the Board of Directors of the Marriott Vacation Club flagship resort, Cypress Harbor located in Orlando Florida. John also has been involved in the “On Target” Firefighting Combat Challenge (FFCC) program since 1997 and in the fall of 2024 was elected “as a Legion” into the FFCC Hall of Fame.
John has written many articles on protective clothing for both the industrial petro/chemical, utility marketplace and municipal and industrial fire service markets and Co- authored the first protective clothing design criteria ever written for Fire Fighters. At present he is a board member of The Fire and Emergence Manufacturers and Services Association (FEMSA) and serves as a Co-Chair of the joint FEMS/FAMA Government Affairs Committee
